In the ensuing confusion, our correspondent gathered that the mother of the runaway member sneaked out to call the police.
Operatives of the Ilasan Police Division, who responded to the distress call, were said to have raced to the scene and arrested 11 members of the group.
The suspects are Godwin Victor, Benjamin Daniel, Saviour Anioffiong, Lawal Ibrahim, Shola Odekunle, Sodiq Olawuyi, Segun Fagbohun, Bashiru Lawal, Chinedu Francis, Wahab Adams and Ifarinde Adeniyi.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrests in a statement on Friday, said one locally-made shotgun, four live cartridges, three cutlasses, one sledge hammer, ten horsewhips and charms were recovered from the assailants.
He said, “What could have passed as an ordinary initiation into a newly formed confraternity named, The New Black Movement of Africa, a breakaway faction of the Aiye cult, turned sour when one of the recruits, who couldn’t endure the torture and other initiation rites he was subjected to, bolted for his dear life and ran to his mother’s house in Jakande Estate, Ajah, Lagos.
“Miffed by the apparent show of cowardice by the intending recruit and the fact that he may give them up to the police, the group chased him to his mother’s residence and began to beat up everybody in sight. They also robbed residents of the estate who were woken up by their noise.
“Unfortunately for the group, the mother of the runaway boy, sneaked out of the house and placed a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilasan division, CSP Onyinye Onwuamaegbu, who led a police team to the estate and arrested 11 members of the group.”
The police spokesperson said two alleged cult members, Rasheed Yusuf, aka Radical, and Abel Okwo, were arrested during a supremacy battle between Aiye and Eiye confraternities on Akerele Street, Oworonshoki.
Oti stated that the two suspects had earlier been charged to court about two months ago by the state police command with cult related offences.
He added, “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, has assured Lagosians that the command will not relent in its efforts to rid the state of members of these unlawful societies. He therefore calls on parents to talk to their children on the evil consequences of belonging to cults and solicits more cooperation.”
