Rainstorm destroyed lots of building, leaving many homeless

Hundreds of buildings and shops have been destroyed by rainstorms in some towns and villages in Ondo State on Friday and Saturday.

Scene of the incident

The rainstorms, which occurred during downpour in the affected areas, rendered many residents homeless and destroyed properties valued at millions of naira.

The affected towns are Akure, the state capital, Oba Ile, Okitipupa, Igbotako, Ilutitun, Ikoya and Omotoso, among others.

It was gathered that some houses and shops in the affected areas had their roofs blown off by the rainstorms, while many electric poles and telecommunications mast fell on the buildings.

Some of the poles reportedly fell on the roads.

However, there was no report of death in the incident.

One of the victims of the rainstorms, Mr. Vincent Adeyemi, appealed to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency to come to their aid, lamenting that the incident had adversely affected them.

He said, “About 50 houses were affected in my community and many of us cannot afford to repair the things that were damaged by the rainstorm. So, we are calling on the state and federal government to assist us; the loss is much.”

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Okitipupa Constituency in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Sola Ebiwonjumi, has appealed to the state government to come to the rescue of his constituents, saying the rainstorms had rendered them homeless.

The lawmaker, who noted  that about 1,000 houses were affected in his constituency, appealed to the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu led-administration to assist victims with relief materials.
