Herdsmen attacks: Catholics plan mass protest

It was learnt that the demonstration would be attended by the Catholic faithful drawn from different parishes within the Benin metropolis, especially in the Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Egor Local Government areas of the state.
It was also learnt that the protest would be used to condemn the recent attack on a Catholic church in Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The April 24 attack left two priests and 17 faithful of St. Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor-Mbalom, Ayar-Mbalom, in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, dead.
The deceased priests had been identified as Fr. Joseph Gor and Fr. Felix Tyolaha.
The Director of the Archdiocesan Communication Centre, Fr. Stephen Okojie, could not be reached for comments on the planned protest.
Calls put across to his mobile lines by our correspondent indicated that they were busy while he had yet to respond to a text message sent to him on Sunday.
But a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the protest would begin at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church on Airport Road, Benin.
“The protest is going to be a big one because all Catholics in Benin will be mobilised to meet at St. Paul’s (Catholic Church) on Airport road. This was announced during the Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral located on Mission road today (Sunday).
“We want to use it (protest) to condemn the attacks by the armed herdsmen and call on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution.”
