A man was swallowed by an escalator at an underground station when a massive gaping hole opened up beneath his feet.

He had only stepped on to the moving stairs seconds earlier but suddenly found himself gripping onto the hand rail.

Terrifying CCTV captured the moment the man swings wildly as the escalator malfunctions, but is eventurally unable to hold on.

He disappears into the dark gap left behind after the escalator collapsed. The footage was filmed during rush hour at the Ayazaga Metro station in Istanbul, Turkey, on February 27.

It shows the broken escalator not moving, with crowds of people choosing to walk down the steps instead.

After a stream of bodies walk down it, the victim, named locally as Mehmet Ali Erik, steps on. Seconds later, the stairs collapse, sending everyone on the escalator sliding forwards towards the ground.

But after Mehmet lost his grip, he plummeted through the escalator hole and was reportedly trapped under the metal stairs for an hour.

After he was rescued by firefighters he was taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality had reportedly put up a warning sign near the broken escalator before the accident occurred – but it failed to prevent people from using it.
