Unbelivable! See how Flood sacks people living in a community
Hundreds of homes and over four churches in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State were on Saturday sacked by flood. The flood, which resulted from the heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, also destroyed property worth millions of naira.
It was gathered that some churches within the area could not observe their Sunday worship service due to the flood.
Although the area seems prone to flood, residents blamed the incident on the poor drainage system in the area.
One of the victims of the flooding, Mr. Inyesoemi Benibo, told Southern City News that several properties belonging to the churches and residents of the area were damaged in the flood.
Benibo, who is a landlord in the area, blamed the construction company that handled the Rumuolumeni road project for the flood.
According to him, the company did not construct good drainage to flank the newly-built road in the area, adding that the water became too heavy for the gutters to carry.
Benibo recalled that residents had approached the company and complained about the poor handling of the drainage that emptied water into a canal in the area.
He also noted that there was a blockade in the drainage that obstructed free flow of water, causing the flooding.
He said, “We have been rendered homeless because of flood, my family slept inside a church far from this place while I slept inside my car.
“One of my neighbours has not been seen since last night when we saw him parking his property and at that time, his family had moved to another place. Nobody knows what has happened to him now.
“MCC is to blame for all this suffering now. I remember we called them when they were constructing this Iwofe Road, which even attracted the attention of Governor Nyesom Wike, who ordered them to canalise that area properly, but they did not listen. Now, the small canal has been blocked, the water is not flowing.”
Another resident, Pastor Namso Udoh, complained that since the construction of the Rumuolumeni-Iwofe Road, they had never lived comfortably in the area.
Udoh called on the state government to intervene in order to save the residents of the area from continuous flooding.
He also called for quick provision of relief materials for the victims.
