No fewer than 200 shops and 2,005 stalls, along with goods worth millions of naira, were gutted by fire on Sunday at the popular Masaka Market in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.Illustration purpose |
The Chairman, Karu Traders Association, Chief Sunday Danladi, said the inferno affected shops selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables.
He said, “Over 200 locked-up shops and 2,005 stalls selling cosmetics, foodstuffs, textile materials and other valuables were completely razed down by the inferno.”
Danladi called on the state government to provide a standby fire engine in the market to avert future recurrence.
“I also want to plead with the Nasarawa State government to come to the aid of the affected traders as many may not have the means to restart their business,” he said.
Some of the affected traders expressed shock over the destruction of their livelihood.
They called on the market leaders and relevant government agencies to investigate the cause of the fire.
The Esu of Karu, Chief Luka Panya-Baba commiserated with the affected traders and urged them to “accept the tragedy as an act of God.”
