Strange But True: Man Sets Self Ablaze Over Wife’s Unfaithfulness

A middle-aged man has reportedly set himself ablaze over his wife’s alleged infidelity on Owharen Street, off Ovwian, in the Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred on Friday.

Sources said the incident led to panic among residents of the area as the fire spread to other apartments, leading to loss of property worth millions of naira.

A resident, who declined to be identified, told PUNCH Metro that the victim had in the past threatened to kill himself after his wife was reportedly caught having sex with a resident of the area.

He added that on Friday when the man returned home, he locked himself, poured fuel on his body, and set fire to himself.

He said, “A few weeks ago, his wife, Blessing, was caught by their neighbours having sex with a young man. The guy is one of the people whom the husband usually sent on an errand in the area.

“Though the wife has packed out, the man returned home that day, poured fuel on his body and set himself ablaze.”

Another resident of the area said attention was drawn to the incident when a thick smoke was seen billowing out of the apartment, which later spread to other apartments.

 The owner of the building, Mr. Nyonren Egharan, while lamenting the incident, said, “When the fire broke out, I ran to where the fire started from, broke into the apartment and tried to rescue the victim who insisted that he wanted to end his life.”

The landlord, who claimed that all his life savings were consumed in the inferno, appealed to the Delta State Government to his rescue to enable him to start life again.

A source at the Ovwian-Aladja Police Station also confirmed the incident, adding that the victim’s remains had been taken to a morgue.
