“When I Become Governor, I’ll Explain” – Davido Announces Intention To Run For Governorship Position

Top Nigerian singer, Davido may have just made his intention to lead the people of Osun state known as he responded to a fan on Twitter who questioned rumours the singer may be going into politics.

He’s the Nigerian star of Afropop, feted across Africa and the globe as a multi-millionaire singer-songwriter and record producer.

Responding to the Twitter user who asked for an explanation on Davido’s interest in governorship when two of his uncles have been senators, the singer responded, “When I become governor, I’ll explain”.
Davido, who took to Twitter on Sunday morning to discuss politics, has been in the middle of arguments and insults with a few fans who have disagreed with him.
Davido also called on young Nigerians and especially those in the booming entertainment industry to participate actively in politics without fear of harm and intimidation from dirty politicians.
It would be recalled that pop sensation, Davido has previously hinted on the possibility of getting involved in politics.

The OBO revealed this during an interview with Channel 4. According to the Fall singer, there are things that are not done the right way in the Nigerian political sphere. He said; I might probably go into politics, if I’m not in it 100 percent I might just be around it. “There are a lot of things going on at home that is not right.”

Also convinced he can bring a change to the game if he gets into a political position, he further said; “If I’m in the right position there is a lot of things I will do differently.”

It would be recalled that Davido — real name David Adedeji Adeleke — was more focused on party politics and getting his uncle elected as governor of his home state of Osun this weekend.
Davido Ademola Adeleke, dubbed “the dancing senator” because of his penchant for dancing in public, must have hoped his high-profile nephew can win him as many voters as he has music fans.

The 58-year-old politician ran for the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Gboyega Oyetola of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Candidates from no fewer than 48 parties vied to replace APC Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who stepped down after a maximum of two four-year terms.

Davido’s intervention is undoubtedly the highlight of a state election that is being seen as test of President Muhammadu Buhari’s popularity in Nigeria‘s southwest. The region, which includes Lagos, the country’s megacity of 20 million people, is a key electoral prize for any presidential hopeful and major political parties.

– Political dynasty –

Davido, who has become a common sight on the campaign trail took star billing at a rally in his hometown of Ede, performing some of his most popular tunes.

He was pictured singing and dancing for fans on top of PDP vehicles in a field, delighting local party members and a throng of supporters. Billboards in the state also show pictures of the singer in traditional dress, leaning on an empty black leather chair next to the Nigerian flag.

“I, Davido, support Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke as governor of Osun State,” the roadside advertisements read.

While he may be better known as one of Nigeria‘s most successful musical exports, Davido also comes from a well-known political dynasty.

His grandfather, Raji Ayoola Adeleke, was a senator between 1979 and 1983 while another uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, was Osun’s first civilian governor from January 1992 to November 1993.

The performer’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, is a wealthy businessman with interests in banking, property, education, shipping, haulage and oil and gas.
