Manchester United were forced to use all three substitutions in the first half of the much-anticipated Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side were hit by an injury crisis.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata both started the fixture at Old Trafford but hobbled off with injuries midway through the first half. England forward Jesse Lingard replaced Mata but had to be removed himself just 16 minutes after coming on with a hamstring problem.

Lingard had just wasted United’s best chance of the half, failing to take the ball around Alisson after a neat through ball from Romelu Lukaku.

It was the first time Manchester United had made three first-half substitutions in the first half of a Premier League fixture, while they are the first team to do it since Burnley in January 2015.

The first half ended goalless with Premier League title challengers Liverpool unable to turn their possession into a lead. Liverpool also suffered an injury blow when striker Roberto Firmino was forced off and replaced by Daniel Sturridge.

On the string of injuries that interrupted the opening 45 minutes, Manchester United legend Gary Neville said: ‘This is very unusual. ‘The intensity of the match plays a part but this is unusual. The [Jesse] Lingard one is not unusual because he’s obviously not right, otherwise he would have started.

‘With the Mata, Herrera and Firmino injuries – there’s nothing you can do about it.’ Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, said: ‘Ole must have run over a black cat this morning, this is unbelievable. ‘It was outstanding football from Manchester United [Lingard’s chance] and it was unbelievable from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

‘Liverpool will get more frustrated as this game goes on and Jurgen Klopp is cutting an increasingly frustrated figure – it could play into United’s hands.’
