Notorious Boko Haram Terrorist Nabbed With Fake Military Uniform
Troops of 195 Battalion, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, in conjunction with Police Mobile Force and Civilian JTF, while on cordon and search operation, yesterday, arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, named Mohammed Maina.He was found to be in possession of military kits and Mobile Police Force uniform in Umalari, Borno State. He has since been handed over to 7 Military Intelligence Brigade for further interrogation.
Recall that the Nigerian troops say they have arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist. The suspect, the Army claims, was arrested at Bulabulim Ngarnam community on the fringes of Maiduguri in Borno State.
In an electronic release signed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Sani Kukasheka Usman, and tweeted via the Nigerian Army’s verified Twitter handle @HQNigerianArmy, the Army said: “Gallant troops of 7 Division Garrison, carrying out cordon and search operations in conjunction with troops of 195 Battalion, Mobile Policemen and CJTF in some parts of the fringes of Maiduguri, today (Friday) discovered and arrested a wanted Boko Haram terrorists group member called Babagana Abubakar (aka Alagarno), hiding at Bulabulim Ngarnam community.
“He was found hiding in a room in possession of two military ballistic helmets, a pair of military desert boot, a fragment jacket, a jersey pullover, military backpack, camouflage design shorts, two voter identification cards, national identification card, amulets, camouflage T-shirts and military jungle hat.
“He has since been moved out of the area for further interrogation.”
The e-release added that “the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, who is also the Commander, Sector 1 of Operation Lafiya Dole, had visited the troops and conveyed the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole’s commendation to them for the painstaking efforts and professionalism.”
The Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009 when the jihadist group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. In 2012, tensions within Boko Haram resulted in gradual split of the group between Salafist conservative faction led by Abu Usmatul al-Ansari, and the more dominant, violent faction led by Abubakar Shekau. By 2015, part of the group split into al-Qaeda affiliated Ansaru, and Shekau’s faction became ISIL’s West Africa branch.
In 2013, over 1,000 people died as a result of the conflict. The violence escalated dramatically in 2014, with 10,849 deaths. In 2014, the insurgency spread to neighboring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger thus becoming a major regional conflict. In 2015, a coalition offensive forced Boko Haram to retreat into the Sambisa Forest. The insurgency took place within the context of long-standing issues of religious violence between Nigeria’s Muslim and Christian communities. Boko Haram has been called the world’s deadliest terrorist group, in terms of the number of people it has killed.
