Young Man Killed During Argument Over Sharing Of Money Given By A Political Candidate
A final year student in Fine and Applied Art at the Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, James Eze, was on Monday shot dead by a suspected rival group over the sharing of money given to them by political party’s campaign team.Eze, in his early 20s, was reportedly gunned down few minutes after the People’s Democratic Party campaign train left the Famgbe community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.
A source, who did not want his name in print, said the young man had engaged members of the other group in a heated argument over the largesse when he was shot at close range by the rival group.
It was reported that members of the PDP campaign team took to their heels following the gunshots as both groups engaged in a shootout, which caused tension in the community.
The source said, “We were at a corner watching the rally when money was given to the young man (Eze), but as the campaign team was preparing to leave, another group surfaced from nowhere and demanded the money.
“The young man refused to hand over the money and he was immediately shot first in the hand with which he was holding the bag containing the money and then in the chest at close range.
“His group members, who were taken by surprise, immediately mobilised for reprisal, which led to sporadic gunfire between them. No other live was lost but many were injured. I cannot ascertain the number now.”
When contacted, the spokesman for the state Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said he had not been briefed by the police divisional headquarters in Yenegoa, and promised to get back to our correspondent. He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
A young man in his late 20s, identified as Chimezie Dike, was on Saturday stabbed to death during a fight with one Henry Ekeozor over the pasting of campaign posters on the wall of a building.
The incident was said to have happened around 8.20pm at 40B Azikiwe Street, Mile 2, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The deceased, according to sources, was not a member of the All Progressives Congress, but was contracted to paste the campaign posters of Collyns Owondah, a House of Representatives candidate of the party in the area.
It was gathered that Henry and his mother, Ifeoma Ekeozor, a woman leader of the APC in the area, had expressed dissatisfaction over the pasting of campaign posters of the House of Representatives candidate on the wall of their residence.
The disapproval by the duo reportedly caused a fierce argument with Dike, a development that degenerated into a fight before the victim was stabbed in the chest. A source said Dike bled to death before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead by doctors.
The source, who identified himself as Dengi, said, “The woman (Ifeoma Ekeozor) is a woman leader in the APC, while the man, whose campaign posters were being posted, is also of the same political party, but they belong to different factions of the party.
“The young man pasting the campaign poster was Chimezie Dike from the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.
The boy came to the street to paste the posters of a politician running for an election. “In the process, the son of the woman leader began to quarrel with him and within a short time, the son of the woman stabbed Chimezie. He (Chimezie) died before he got to the hospital.”
Another eyewitness, who preferred not to be mentioned, alleged that a dagger belonging to Henry’s brother, who is a soldier, was used to stab Dike in the chest.
The eyewitness stated, “The woman (Ifeoma Ekeozor) even broke a bottle during the argument. Everybody parked out of the house because a group of youths, who were not happy about the killing of the boy, went ahead to ransack people’s houses.
“A journalist staying in the building lost some of her property, including a laptop, after she left the place in a hurry to avoid being injured.
The house is a three-storey building and the shop operated by the woman (Ifeoma) is on the ground floor.
