The Hypocrisy Of Being Nigerian: Our Mandate To Loot

A mandate is an official order or commission to do something. The Chinese Zhou Dynasty created the Mandate Of Heaven, which declared that only on ruler can be in China and that this ruler had the blessings of the gods. They used this Mandate to overthrow the Shang Dynasty and it became the backdrop of subsequent dynasties in China.

Two millenniums and some centuries later in the country called Nigeria, in West Africa, a new mandate has been given: the Mandate To Loot.

The two foremost political parties in Nigerian politics of today, the People's Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress have declared a free for all looters tenure ahead.

In a campaign rally at Edo State, the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole announced that "once you come to APC, your sins are forgiven" he made this declaration in a bid to encourage more politicians to defect from arch rival party PDP to the all forgiving APC.

In lieu of this, there was outrage all over the country, many slinging shots at the ruling party and President Buhari's "fight against corruption".

The spokesman for the PDP Presidential Campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, in reaction said Oshiomhole has finally exposed President Muhammadu Buhari as “patron of corruption”, dismissing the administration’s anti-corruption fight as a ruse.

Fast forward to almost two weeks later, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed he is open to pardoning corrupt leaders and looters if elected into power.

Now this article isn't about our politicians and their bantigism but about we Nigerians ourselves. When the APC declared forgiveness for corrupt leaders many of the people I spoke with were slightly peeved, vocally antagonistic or showed indifference.

From yesterday however after Atiku's debut into the corruption forgiving business, I conducted a form of census again to weigh in on the thoughts of Nigerians and the clime majority of the people I spoke with were inclined to was "oya let us kuku go and loot o, nothing go happen to us".

If we have this mentality ourselves of since forgiveness is sure, we can do bad, who then are we to criticize our agbada-wearing thieves at the helm of power??

Because a declaration of forgiveness has been given, most we then decide to start doing bad or continue being evil? Even Apostle Paul asked "what shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?"

The answer is NO. There is no thief that automatically became a professional at night, it all starts from the little things we ignore or justify on the account that many do it also.

This saying is fast becoming a cliche in society but truly; BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE
