WhatsApp has brought into force a limit on the amount of messages each user can forward on to their contacts.

From today, anyone with a WhatsApp account will only be able to forward a message on to five individuals or groups.

Previously, the limit was set at 20.

WhatsApp, which was bought by Facebook in 2014, wants to use the limit as part of its global plan to fight ‘misinformation and rumours’.

WhatsApp is the biggest private messaging application in the word, with over 2 billion users. It’s frequently used as a means of spreading fake news – a similar problem experienced by Facebook itself.

In India, more than 40 people have been killed by mobs in the past two years after false rumours about child abduction or organ harvesting were spread through WhatsApp.

And in Mexico, two innocent men were burned alive last month due to gossip and fake news which was circulated using the app.

WhatsApp then said it would limit the ability to circulate messages by preventing users from spreading posts to more than five people or groups and removing the quick forward button placed next to messages.

Initially, this feature was only rolled out in India, but from today it will be in force across the world.

‘We’re imposing a limit of five messages all over the world as of today,’ Victoria Grand, vice president for policy and communications at WhatsApp, said at an event in Jakarta, Indonesia today.
