JUST IN! Justice Tanko Mohammed Resumes Duty As Acting CJN, Presides Over 5-man Panel

The Supreme Court has resumed sitting on Monday with the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, presiding over a five-man panel of the court.

Monday is the first working day after last Friday’s suspension of the CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Muhammad was immediately sworn in by President Buhari, in the stead of Onnoghen, on Friday.

Others sitting alongside Justice Muhammad on the panel at the Monday’s sitting are Justices Mary Peter-Odili, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Amiru Sanusi and Paul Galinje.

There are 10 cases listed for hearing on the Supreme Court’s Monday’s case list published on the court’s website.

Meanwhile, President Buhari’s sack has received maximum condemnation from all sides including the UK, US, EU and other international bodies, tagging the move as unconstitutional at a time when election is just around the corner.

In another development, lawyers across the country continue to condemn the CJN’s suspension while legal luminaries like Femi Falana (SAN) as called on the CJN to resign even after his suspension is lifter as that is the most honourable thing to do in trivial circumstances like the one in which the CJN is embroiled in.
