Hijab crisis: Traditionalists, PTA Join Litigation Against ISI

The court case instituted by some female Muslim students at the University of Ibadan  International School to enforce their rights to wear hijab took a new twist on Friday as their colleagues, who are traditionalists, joined as respondents.

Their applications were not opposed by the applicants’ lead counsel, Waheed Egbewole, SAN.

A lawyer, Babatunji Ajibade, SAN, led other lawyers to appear for all the four earlier respondents while Oladipo Olasope appeared for Fatunmise Abe and Fawoke Abe, who are among the students practising traditional religion in the school.

Consequently, Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court 9 admitted the applicants as new respondents, following their applications to the court.

The two traditionalists and a parent, Olutayo-Aro, father of Iteoluwakiishi, who was the school’s Social Prefect for 2017/2018 session, had their written applications filed before the court granted.

They were named the fifth, sixth and seventh respondents respectively.

The school’s Parent Teacher Association also informed the court of its decision to apply to be joined as a co-respondent.

Mr. Lekan Thani, who held the brief of Mr. Tade Ipadeola, told the court that the association’s application was delayed by a vital document which had yet to be received. Thani said the application would have been filed before the next adjourned date.

The development made Justice Akintola to advise all parties in the case to embrace a peaceful method in resolving their differences.
