Court Fixes Date For Forfeiture Ruling In Patience Jonathan's Fraud Case

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday fixed February 11, 2019 to decide whether or not the sums of $8,435,788.84 and over N7.35bn found in 15 bank accounts linked to Mrs Patience Jonathan would be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commssion, which filed an application seeking the permanent forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government, claimed that its investigations revealed that the $8,435,788.84 and over N7.35bn emanated from the coffers of Bayelsa State.

The anti-graft agency said the funds were moved at a time when Patience served as a Permanent Secretary in one the ministries in Bayelsa State.

Counsel for the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, told Justice Mojisola Olatoregun that the funds were siphoned from the state’s coffers using a non-governmental organisation, Women for Change Initiative, and some firms, which were also joined as defendants in the forfeiture application.

The firms were listed as Globus Integrated Services Ltd., Finchley Top Homes Ltd., Am-Pm Global Network Ltd., Pagmat Oil and Gas Ltd. , Magel Resort Ltd.

Also joined as a respondent was one Esther Oba.

Oyedepo said at the Wednesday’s proceedings that non-payment of tax by the companies showed the funds were from illegitimate sources

He added, “It’s an unlawful act to induce men and women of honour to make donations and then convert them to personal use. The funds of the NGO were unlawfully converted.”

But counsel for the companies, Chief Mike Ozekhome, opposed the EFCC’s prayer for the final forfeiture of the funds.

Upon taking arguments from the parties, Justice Olatoregun adjourned till February 11, 2019 for ruling.
