A mother and her child were on Tuesday burnt to death in a lone accident that involved a Mazda commercial bus with number plate Lagos EKY 616 XW at the Onigari area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accident to PUNCH Metro in Abeokuta.
Akinbiyi said the accident was caused by a tyre blow-out, which he noted resulted in the vehicle falling on its side and thereafter catching fire.
According to him, the accident occurred at about 2.50pm.
He stated, “The rear tyre of the vehicle had a blow-out while on motion; the bus fell on its side and caught fire.
“I learnt that the bus was coming from Iwo Road area of Ibadan and was heading to Lagos when the accident occurred at the Onigari area of the expressway.
“Fifteen people were involved in the accident; nine were injured, while a woman and her child were burnt to death.”
The TRACE spokesman explained that the corpses of the victims were deposited in the Adeoyo Hospital’s morgue in Ibadan, while the injured were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State.
