All over the world, a democratic setting entails candidates of different political parties contesting the presidential position. Only one of them eventually emerges the winner and becomes the President of not only the political party under which platform they contested but also of that country.

Thus, the office of the President so elected automatically becomes a sacred institution and therefore commands respect by all and sundry. By implication, the office of the President of any nation, Nigeria not excluded, goes beyond party affiliation. The rowdiness or protests that characterised the budget presentation at the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari last week to the extent that the President was booed and ridiculed by the lawmakers was most unfortunate and highly condemnable.

Our democratic maturity is supposed to have gone beyond that ignominious level. The level of performance of the President if deemed unsatisfactory has nothing to do with provoking negative reaction at such an occasion. For the obvious political dichotomy in the National Assembly to have been carried to that level is indeed shameful. That the National Assembly members are eminent personalities is not in doubt. That ought to reflect in their collective conduct no matter the circumstances.

Far beyond party differences, the desire to uphold the dignity of the office of the President and move our dear nation forward should be uppermost in our minds. Any attempt to ridicule our President amounts to bringing down and lowering the integrity of our country. That ignoble act of disrepute should be avoided in future gatherings as it is capable of making our country a laughing stock before the international community.
