Tragedy as Tipper driver crushes motorcyclist to death in Lagos

A tipper driver, Yakubu Kelani, has been arrested for crushing a commercial motorcyclist, Adisa Ekundayo, to death in the Oke-Odo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Kelani, who was driving a tipper with number plate LSR 831 XC, had gone to deliver a tipper-load of sand at a customer’s site.

The tipper driver, who was on his way back to the garage after delivering the sand, was said to have lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the motorcyclist, who died as a result of the impact.

Ekundayo’s son, Pamilerin, said the tragedy occurred at a sharp corner in the Aboru area of Oke-Odo, adding that Kelani left his lane to hit his father.

The refrigerator repairer said, “I was not far from the area where the accident occurred. I quickly rushed to the scene when people who knew that my father was the one involved in the accident informed me.

“When I got there, what I saw was that the tipper crossed over to his (Ekundayo’s) lane to hit him. He died due to the injuries he sustained.”

A source, who did not want his name mentioned, said Ekundayo was rushed to a hospital, where he eventually died, adding that the deceased had been involved in a similar accident in the past.

The tipper driver, Kelani, however, blamed Ekundayo for the accident, adding that he ran into him because the motorcycle was on top speed.

He said other motorcyclists, who stormed the scene of the accident, wanted to burn his tipper, adding that he reported the accident to the police when he felt threatened.

A family member of the deceased, who identified himself only as Ariyo, said although the police had taken over the case, the family believed that the accident was not intentional.

Ekundayo’s brother, Julius, who stated that he was not pressing charges against the driver, said he could not inform their mother of his younger brother’s death.

“Adisa is my younger brother; his death is painful but I don’t want to have any case with anybody. We still have a mother, but I cannot inform her that he is dead,” Julius said.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the command mobilised operatives to the scene of the accident to restore normalcy in the area when commercial motorcyclists, who were pained by the loss of their colleague, threatened to burn down the tipper.

Oti said, “The accident involved a tipper driver, Yakubu Kelani, and a motorcyclist, Adisa Ekundayo. The tipper driver rammed into the motorcyclist around 1pm at Church Bus Stop, Aboru, Oke-Odo. The motorcyclist, who sustained serious injuries due to the accident, was rushed to the hospital where he died.

“Other motorcyclists, who were pained by the death of their colleague, had stormed the scene of the accident in a bid to burn down the tipper, but we mobilised our operatives to the scene to prevent the motorcyclists from burning the tipper. We have impounded the tipper and also arrested the driver for questioning.”
