Police arraign policeman accused of killing ex-minister’s niece

The Police on Friday arraigned a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inagozie Godwin, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Zuba, Abuja, for the murder of Miss Anita Akapson, a niece to a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman.

Godwin pleaded not guilty to the one count of culpable homicide when it was read to him before Justice A. O Ebong on Friday.

The prosecution alleged in the charge that the 36-year-old policeman shot Akpason, aged 31, at about 9.45pm at Katampe area of Abuja on October 13, 2018.

The prosecutor, Donatus Abah, alleged that the offence of culpable homicide was contrary to section 22(3) of the Penal Code and punishable under section 22(4) of the same code.

The judge granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N50m with two sureties in like sum after listening to the submissions of the defence counsel, Mr. Paul Samson, on his client’s bail application.

Justice Ebong, in granting bail to the defendant, dismissed the objection by the prosecutor to the bail application.

The judge held that the prosecutor failed to adduce cogent reasons under the law to object the bail.

The judge noted that the offence of culpable homicide was not punishable by death, but by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The matter was adjourned till November 29 for trial.
