Nigerian University Graduates Who Became Notorious Kidnappers Arrested By The Police

According to a report by New Telegraph, the police have arrested two graduates of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUAM) and Benue State University (BSU) all in Makurdi for allegedly kidnapping and terrorising residents of Makurdi town and its environs.

The police also arrested one of their accomplices, Paul Keghuur (27).

One the suspects, Magudu Harris (36), said to be the gang leader, is a graduate of Industrial Physics from FUAM while 34-year-old Anyam Terhemen, whose Golf car with registration number Lagos CY 687 SMK was being used for their nefarious activities, graduated from BSU in 2011 where he read Psychology.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ene Okon, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the milestones recorded by the command in the last two weeks.

Okon said the suspected kidnappers were apprehended during a joint operation by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IG) Monitoring Unit from Abuja in collaboration with the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSAR) personnel of the state command led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Ben Igweh.

The police boss said Harris had confessed to have masterminded and executed the kidnap of a female official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mrs. Veronica Jirgba, on her way from the Shelter of Glory Church, in September.

Okon said the suspects collected N1 million for Jirgba’s abduction.

He said: “Further investigation led to the arrest of other members of the gang, Anyam Terhemen (34) of number 23, Idye village, off Vandeikya Street, Makurdi. He is a 2011 graduate of Psychology from Benue State University (BSU), the owner and driver of the gang’s Golf car, and Paul Keghuur (27) (living) behind BNARDA office in Makurdi.”

Okon said frantic efforts were being made to arrest the fleeing member of the gang identified as Loho Caleb living behind Wurukum market in Makurdi, the state capital.

The commissioner assured residents that the IG Monitoring Unit would remain committed and resolute in the fight against crime.

He implored the people to go about their normal and lawful businesses without apprehension.

The commissioner also urged the residents to report all suspicious persons or movements to the police for necessary action.

The suspects told reporters that it was the devil which pushed them into the criminal act.

“I am a graduate of Industrial Physics from the University of Agriculture in Makurdi. I was pushed into the act because things were becoming very difficult for me and I have been trying to make ends meet but things proved to be harder.

“The worse of it all is that I have not been able to get a job since I graduated. I am married and I have two children. Hard times have really choked me seriously but it is the work of the devil,” Harris said.

In his confession, Terhemen said, “all that the police have said against me is true. I want to tell you that it is the work of the devil. My family provides everything for me but I don’t know why I joined this association.

“Since I graduated from the university, I have been doing carpentry work; after I did my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Imo State.”
