West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini ‘very happy’ after Arsenal loss

Pellegrini is yet to claim his first top-flight points as Hammers boss as the result at the Emirates made it three losses on the spin.

Marko Arnautovic gave West Ham the lead but Arsenal turned the clash around thanks to Nacho Monreal, an Issa Diop own goal and Danny Welbeck's late strike.

While the east Londoners are still looking to get off the mark this season, Pellegrini is seeing signs of life at the club.

He said: “Arsenal won 3-1, but if you analyse the game we had many opportunities to score a goal before.

“We were very unlucky with the own-goal that put Arsenal on top, and the last goal was in the last minute when we are trying to get back in the game.

“I’m very happy about how we played. The team, in the current way, created a lot of chances. We played well, with good pace and good movement.

“I’m sure a victory will come.”

Pellegrini added: “I’m happy with the team. I think the team played well and I think we were a team that defended well.

“Okay, Arsenal scored three goals at the end, but they didn’t create many chances, so I’m happy that we’ve improved as a team and we’re improving every week.

“I think, from the game today, fans will see we are on our way.”

One major blow for West Ham was the injury scares to star duo Arnautovic and Michail Antonio, who both had to go off early in north London.

Pellegrini said: “We will see during the week what happened with Marko. He felt a pain in his muscle.

“Antonio also has a problem with his ankle, but I hope that they will recover.”

Meanwhile, Robert Snodgrass believes West Ham’s luck will change if they continue to attack.

The Scotsman said: “It’s very disappointing.

"We’ve got an upset dressing room in there because, in massive spells of the game, we were the far better team and that’s exactly what the manager wanted.

“We’ve still got to defend a bit better and people are probably looking at us saying ‘you’ve got to take your chances’ and we should have done.

“We are going through a transitional period and the manager wants to change it from last season.

“We need to keep believing, we need to keep playing that way attacking-wise, creating chances and we’ll definitely take them. We need to take them, anyway, if we’re going to get any sort of result.

“We did well in the early stages, but it’s ultimately disappointing again.”
