Police arrest 85-year-old drug baron during raid

One of Spain’s oldest and most infamous drug barons, Manuel Charlin, 85, was arrested on Wednesday during a large-scale raid against drug trafficking in the North-Western Galicia Region.

Charlin’s son, Melchor, and 16 others were also arrested in the raid.

Spanish police confirmed media reports about the arrests, with more expected in other regions of Spain in connection with the raid.

Charlin has long been the patriarch of the so-called Charlin clan, which controls one of Europe’s largest drug-trafficking rings from Galicia, according to Spanish officials, and delivers drugs originating from South America to countries across the continent.

Police stormed the Charlins’ villa in the Pontevedra province on Wednesday, the regional newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported, citing officials.

Other members of the family have already been handed prison sentences on charges of drug-trafficking and money laundering.

The head of the crime family himself has already spent 20 years behind bars after being found guilty of bringing large amounts of cocaine from Colombia to Spain on a cargo ship.

He was freed in 2010.
