IVAN RAKITIC was the Croatia hero as they knocked out Denmark on penalties to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

It looked look we were in for another thriller when both teams scored in the first four minutes.

Mathias Jorgensen set the record for Denmark's quickest ever World Cup goal with his strike just 58 seconds in.

The ball fell to the Huddersfield centre-back in the box and his shot found its way into the back of the net through a host of bodies.

Denmark's lead was short-lived and striker Mario Mandzukic took just three minutes to level the score with an equally scrappy goal.

A terrible clearance from the Danes smashed off one of their own players and fell into the Juventus hitman's path just six yards out.

Sadly, an 85-minute snoozefest followed and it was not until extra-time when Croatia had the chance to snatch the win.

Nestor Pitana was through on goal when goalscorer Jorgensen took him out from behind in the box.

But Luka Modric's resulting spot-kick was smothered by Kasper Schmeichel, whose dad Peter was roaring him on from the stands.

That set him up perfectly for the resulting shootout.

But it was opposite number Danijel Subasic who came out on top.

And Rakitic scored the winning penalty to send Croatia through to a quarter-final clash against hosts Russia.
