Birnin-Gwari: Two policemen, two attackers killed in ambush
The police in Kaduna have confirmed the death of a woman, who was killed via an accidental discharge from police officers mourning the death of two of their colleagues.The two police officers died during a confrontation with armed bandits in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna State. Two of the attackers also lost their lives, the police said.
According to police, the ambush occurred Monday at Tabanni village along Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road.
Scores of people have been killed in attacks by armed bandits in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The victims include civilians, soldiers and police officers. The attacks and kidnappings have continued despite the deployment of soldiers to the area.
The Kaduna police spokesperson, Muktar Aliyu, disclosed the latest attack in a statement on Tuesday. He also expressed sadness over the death of the civilian.
He explained that the police team were ambushed and attacked by unidentified armed men.
“We wish to categorically state that on 16/07/2018 at about 1830hrs, a team of police officers on special duty, while on routine patrol were ambushed and attacked by unidentified gunmen at Tabanni village along Birnin Gwari- Funtua road. The police team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and at the end, two of the unidentified gunmen were killed and one AK 47 rifle was recovered.
“Unfortunately, two officers lost their lives in the incident. However, the situation has been promptly brought under control,” he said.
He also explained what led to the death of the civilian.
“In their ‘deep mourning’ mood, some police officers, who conveyed the corpses of their late colleagues to Kaduna on 17/07/2018 at about 1100hrs encountered an ‘unfortunate’ incident where there was accidental discharge of gunshot, which hit a female member of the public. She was rushed to the hospital but sadly died from sustained wounds.
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted him later via phone, he expressed sadness over the tragedy. He was however silent on whether the officer(s), who pulled the trigger had been arrested.
“The police command wishes to reassure members of the public that the state is calm and peaceful,” he said.
The Nigerian Police have suffered attacks on its personnel in recent weeks.
On Monday, it offered to pay N5 million to anyone with credible information that would lead to the arrest of those involved in the recent killings of police officers in Abuja and Edo State.
Seven policemen were shot dead on Monday night, July 2, after suspected gunmen opened fire at a stop-and-search duty post in Galadimawa, Abuja.
The suspects, who were reportedly stopped for search by the police officers, opened fire, killing the policemen and injuring one.
Armed persons also on July 14 ambushed and killed four police officers at Sabon Gida, Ora in Edo State while they (police) were on patrol.
