Iceland v Nigeria: What the Eagles and their manager are saying

In what has become a do-or-die affair, the Super Eagles of Nigeria must put their world into action when they file out against Iceland at the Volgograd Arena at 4 pm.
Many of the players have had one thing or the other to say concerning Friday’s match.

“We don’t lack goal scorers,” said Oghenekaro Etebo to FIFA TV. “We scored in the World Cup qualifiers – not just in our home games but also away – otherwise we wouldn’t be here.

“We didn’t do well in the first game but that’s in the past now. All we do now is visualise the game against Iceland and we believe in our abilities.”

Victor Moses also spoke to FIFA TV. “It is a very difficult moment at the minute. The Iceland game we need to go all in and take every point from that game.

“Obviously, it’s not going to be an easy game for us because Iceland – they are tactically very good. When you watch the one they played against Argentina, they did very well. But they are going to come up against a different strategy against us and they are going to come with a different system.

“But the most important thing for us now is to play together as a team, forget about the game against Croatia and hopefully do what we can to win the game against Iceland.

The captain of the team, Mikel Obi, has said he will play anywhere as long as the team succeeds. “I’m the captain of this team. If I have to sacrifice for the team to progress, I will. If I have to sacrifice a position, go play wherever, I will do that for the team to win games.”

Gernot Rohr also disabused minds that have been dredging up conspiracy theories of the German tactician at odds with some of his players. He said at a media parley, “The players and me agree exactly before each game about our organisation.”

The talk must stop now, there is a victory to be won over Iceland.
