Confusion as two female tenants flee with landlord’s children in Edo State

A couple in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State has raised the alarm over the alleged disappearance of their two children.

The children, identified as Amada, aged four, and Christabel, aged two, were said to have been taken away by two women in Utese community, where they lived as tenants.

The children were said to have been left in the custody of the tenants by their mother who went to a stream to wash her clothes.

It was learnt that the tenants, whose names were given as Mercy and Rose from Cross River State, had moved into the community about three weeks ago and told their landlord that they were into farming and hairdressing.

Southern City News learnt that some of the residents had informed the distraught parents that they saw the women flagging down vehicles on the highway but thought they were taking the children on an outing.

Some of them were said to have discovered that the two women had fled with their belongings, when the door of their room was later forced open.

The mother of the children, Mrs. Faith Osaruoname, said that she usually left her children with the tenants when she was not around.

Faith explained that she was informed that the women went out with her children when she returned from the stream.

She, however, said it was upon her husband’s return that she realised that the tenants had fled with her two daughters, adding that calls put across to their mobile phones indicated that they were switched off.

Faith stated, “I thought the girls would soon return home with my children, so I went to cook. After cooking, I wanted to go and get some water again when my husband came back.

“He asked me about the children and I told him they went out with the tenants. I later ran out to look for them but did not find them. I have been calling the numbers of those girls and they were switched off.”

Her husband, Omokpia Osaruoname, expressed shock over the incident as it was unusual for his children not to be around to welcome him home.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor, urged our correspondent to call back to enable him enquire about the matter.

But Nwabuzor had yet to get back on the case as of the time of filing the report as calls put across his mobile number ran out.
