Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has emerged as a surprise favourite to take over from Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid boss.

But despite Wenger's reputation waning over the past few years, it's actually not that big of a surprise at all that he is in contention.

The Frenchman has a relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who he has known for a number of years in some capacity.

And it's no secret that the Los Blancos top brass looked into trying to take Wenger to the Bernabeu when he was at the height of his pomp back in the 2000s.

Back in 2009, Perez spoke to the press about Wenger, and it seems the interview - in hindsight - sheds some light on why the Frenchman is a favourite for the Madrid job.

"We have always liked the Frenchman and we talked a lot with him," Perez told French publication L'Equipe some 11 years ago.

"But he feels very responsible of what is going on and of what is going to happen next at Arsenal. He did not want to leave this club which he has given a lot to."

Wenger admitted at the time that managing Madrid under Perez would "be interesting".

The Frenchman, who stood down as Arsenal boss this summer after 22 years in charge of the north London club, recently spoke about his future, and name-dropped Madrid.

He said: "Real Madrid, I think I turned them down two or three times. They are one of the teams I loved as a kid but I felt it was a very sensitive period for Arsenal," he told beIN Sports.

"When we built the stadium, the banks asked me to commit for five years. The first time, it was inside the five years and I thought 'I cannot do that', it would be betraying my club."

Wenger also turned down the chance to manage England after Euro 2000 and then reportedly 16 years later following the dismal performances in France.

"The daily involvement was important for me and I felt that it should be an English guy that takes the England national team," he added.

"It is a big football country and they have a lot of quality managers. I thought it wasn't right for me. I said no once, twice. I turned so many clubs down, you wouldn't believe it. But I was happy where I was aswell."
