An Associate Professor, University of Calabar (Unical) Dr Eyo Mensah and five students in the institution are to face prosecution over alleged certificate forgery.

Mensah, a lecturer in the department of Linguistics in the University, would face trial in the High Court.

Others are Ferdinand Akanya Esip of IPPA department and five students, George Uwaek, Michael Paul Ufana, Mbuk Atai Umoh, Nsude Mary Imaobong, Olowosoke Olutoun Sileola.

In the High Court sitting in Calabar on Thursday, the Presiding Judge, Justice Emilia Ibok granted leave for commencement of criminal proceedings against the lecturer, and others.

The State Counsel, Barrister Eno Eyamba had moved an exparte motion seeking to secure the Court’s consent to commence criminal charges against the accused persons.

Eyamba told DAILY POST after the motion has been granted that the case has started.

’The motion exparte has been granted and we are commencing the matter in full,” he said.

The accused persons were absent in court but when newsmen contacted Mensah, he said he could not comment on the matter until he was served.

The suspects have been under investigation over a petition written by the former Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke alleging that Dr. Eyo Mensah was collecting money from students to forge Unical certificates for them.

It would be recalled that the Cross River State Director of Public Prosecution, Barr. George Okem had written to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Zana Akpagu, asking him to release the suspects to stand trial on the alleged forgery.

The matter was filed on directives of the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Cross River State.

The state counsel Eyamba explained that investigation had been concluded and the suspects had been “sufficiently implicated”, as such should be released by the university to stand trial in court.
