The silence of the Presidency and the Nigerian military on the news making the rounds online that the missing schoolgirls in Yobe have been rescued, is sending a message that the reports are untrue.

It was earlier reported that residents of Gaidam town of Yobe State, defied 9:00pm curfew hour in jubilation to welcome the rescued schoolgirls late on Wednesday night as children, men, women including house wives lined up on the Maine-Sorroa Street where they received the schoolgirls amidst cheers.

President Muhammadu Buhari on his Twitter page, confirmed that Boko Haram insurgents abducted some students of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, adding that the situation is under control.

He wrote: "I have directed the Minister of Defence to proceed immediately to Zamfara State to undertake an on-the-spot assessment of the situation there. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the Birane Village massacre, and the Government and people of Zamfara."

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters took to their Twitter page to debunk the news of the rescue of the girls, saying that the military men who went for the rescue operation, came back empty handed.

SR wrote: "FLASH: Parents of missing school girls after Boko Haram attacked a girls-only school in Dapchi, Yobe state said there is no evidence that Nigerian security forces rescued any of the missing girls as being speculated."

Omoyele Sowore, the SaharaReporters publisher also gave an update on the news and wrote: "FLASH: At least 93 girls snatched fwhen Boko Haram terrorists attacked an all-girls high school in Dapchi , Yobe state are still missing as Nigerian troops sent to rescue them returned empty-handed."

An activist and convener of "Concerned Nigeria", Adeyanju Deji, also berated the news that the school girls have been rescued, as he wrote on Twitter: "No girls were rescued by the military.

"Hundred of girls still missing. Though they are claiming about 10 or so girls found their way to a military checkpoint. It’s all an attempt by the Buhari government to COVER UP."

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmaliki Sumonu, had on Wednesday told journalists that 111 girls were still missing following Monday’s attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi.

“815 out of the 926 students were physically seen in the school as at Tuesday. There are reports that more girls have returned to the school after the head count,” the Police chief said.

He, however, said the school’s principal told him there were no abductions or deaths in the school. “I am not unaware of the rumours going on, l want to appeal to the press and the society to please cooperate with the security agencies in this situation,” he said.
