Policeman Who Shot And Killed A Rivers Driver Yet To Be Arrested Seven Days After The Murder

A police officer who brutally killed a taxi driver in Rivers state is yet to be arrested and prosecuted seven days after the incident.

The taximan killed by the police officer

A human rights group, Rivers Civil Society Organisation has  expressed disdain over the conduct of the Nigeria Police after its officer allegedly shot dead a taxi driver, Bright Mark in Rivers state.

The driver was allegedly killed last Sunday by a mobile policeman who shot him in the neck at Rumuokoro Roundabout, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The police officer disappeared from the scene before people could arrive and is yet to be arrested.

The spokesman for the rights group, Mr. Isaac Green, in a statement on Sunday, said seven days after the incident, the police had yet to visit the deceased’s family.

According to a report by Punch, Green alleged that the police had maintained that nothing would be done on the matter until the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Zaki, returned from vacation.

“We register our displeasure at the continuous injustice perpetrated by the Nigeria Police after the recent killing of late Mr. Mark Bright, who was murdered in cold blood on Sunday,  February 18, 2018 at Rumuokoro Roundabout, East West Road, by a police escort.

“It will interest you to know that seven days after the incident, the police have blatantly refused to visit the deceased’s family. The man left behind a 21-year-old wife and a four-month-old baby they had in a marriage that was just one year and two months old.

“Instead, the police told the family that nothing can be done until the return of the Commissioner of Police, who is perhaps out of the country enjoying his vacation with his family abroad and to return in three weeks,” he said.

He demanded that the police should name, dismiss and prosecute the cop responsible for the murder of the taxi driver.

It will be recalled that in February 2017, PUNCH Metro reported that a painter, Mr. Ese Akpan, was going to work when he was shot dead by a cop in a police team escorting a bullion van on Old Aba Road, Rumuomasi, Port-Harcourt.

No policeman was also arrested for that killing, which was captured on the CCTV of a hospital near the scene of the incident.
