Lagos City Marathon: Organizers Slam Sahara Reporters Over Lady Who Claimed To have Been Cheated
In a recent report by SaharaReporters, Mary Akor, a Track and Field Athlete representing USA since 2004, had claimed that she was denied her prize money of N3m as the first Nigerian woman to finish the 42km race at the 2018 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Shortly afterwards, organisers of the event also slammed Sahara Reporters for falling cheaply to the lies of Miss Akor who has been tagged a "drug cheat runner" in athletics.
They claimed that a little bit of investigation would have saved the medium a huge blow to their integrity. They also revealed that that was not the first time Miss Akor has tried pulling a stunt.
They claimed she registered and participated as an American athlete during the 2016 edition where she finished 9th and was duly paid her entitlement of $4000.
In 2016, the athlete and her manager, Tony Osheku, equally tried to claim N1m prize money for the first Nigerian woman to breast the tape.
Thereafter, she was informed that she needed to write to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria that she wants to start representing Nigeria again but till date she has not done the needful.
The organisers also denied any form of manhandling by security officials after forcing her way to the podium.
“The security officials only carried her away from the podium and when she insisted on causing commotion, top officials of the event asked that she be allowed to stand on the podium since all she will be collecting at the ceremony is a dummy cheque.
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is an IAAF label race. It is impossible to deny an athlete prize money that they won. If Akor has a genuine case, let her write to the IAAF or CAS.
They advice that she should desist from painting the Lagos City Marathon in a bad light or will face a stiffer penalty if reported to IAAF for exhibiting an unruly behaviour that could tarnish the good image of athletics,” the statement by the organizers concluded.
