A man who tried to stop two thugs from bullying some girls, has had his ear ripped off in a brutal attack that ensued afterwards.

Martin McDonagh, circled, was attacked by two thugs after he tried to prevent them from bullying two girls

This is the shocking moment a Good Samaritan has his ear ripped off by two thugs who ran him over in their 4x4 following a street fight.

Martin McDonagh, 50, was set upon by the pair outside a shop as he tried to prevent them from bullying two girls.

CCTV footage of the brutal attack shows Martin being struck over the head with a bottle before being kicked and stamped on while lying on the ground.

Dazed, he manages to run away from drug dealer Nicholas Adair, 28, and his 30-year-old accomplice Tyrone Gentles.

The then got into a Mitsubishi Shogun and trawled streets in the vehicle looking for Martin.

At one point the two men returned to the shop so Gentles could retrieve his gold tooth which fell out during the initial attack.

Martin is kicked and punched as he lies sprawled on the floor

After spotting his prey, Adair, who was drunk behind the wheel, mounted the pavement and ran over Martin in the Harehills area of Leeds, West Yorks., in the early hours of February 25 last year.

He ear was ripped off as he was dragged beneath the vehicle and he suffered multiple fractures to his skull and jaw and serious chest and rib injuries.

The father-of-ten managed to get to his feet after the attack and staggered back to the shop before collapsing in front of the premises.

Jailing Adair for 12 years, Recorder Joanne Kidd said: "It is clear that you continued to go up and down the streets.

"The purpose was to find Mr McDonagh who you had already injured.

"You mowed him down from behind in circumstances where he was incapable of protecting himself from what was an inevitable blunt force trauma of significant severity."

The court heard Martin now felt like a "broken man" as a result of the life-changing physical and psychological injuries.


After he was run over Martin managed to stagger back to outside the shop where he was first attacked


The victim spent five weeks in intensive care after surgery on his brain, but his ear could not be re-attached.

Recorder Kidd added: "It is unsurprising that he describes himself as a broken man.

"It is unsurprising that he is acutely traumatised by your behaviour - it is hoped that this sentence in some way brings a degree of closure to what happened to him that night."

Adair, of Leeds, West Yorks., was jailed for a total of 12 years after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent.

He also pleaded guilty to money laundering and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Gentles, also of Leeds, was jailed for four and a half years after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding.
