On Monday night it became official.

Arsenal have signed Henrikh Mhkitaryan from Man United, while Alexis Sanchez has gone in the other direction.

But no sooner has that swap deal completed, all focus has now shifted onto Arsenal’s efforts to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal have sent deal-makers Ivan Gazidis and Sven Mislintat to Germany to seal the Aubameyang transfer. But so far they’ve not yet reached an agreement.

Honigstein: Olivier Giroud is the key
German football expert Rafa Honigstein has looked into the Aubameyang to Arsenal deal for the BBC this week.

Speaking on the BBC’s Euro Leagues Football podcast, Honigstein believes that Arsenal will sign the Gabonese international striker this January.

Honigstein has echoed the general narrative that the Gunners are likely to get the deal done for around 60 million euros.

However the critical issue in the talks has been BVB’s attempts to land Olivier Giroud as part of the package. Honigstein revealed that Dortmund want to sign the French international on loan until the end of the season.

Why on loan? Because Dortmund are resistant to selling Aubameyang to the Gunners, only to send half that money back to Arsenal for Giroud.

Does the move make sense?
Honigstein doubts, however, whether Arsenal are making a good deal.

Firstly, the transfer leaves Alexandre Lacazette in a precarious position. He’s the current record signing at the Emirates Stadium. But the assumption is that Aubameyang will become Arsenal’s first choice striker once the deal is completed.

And then there’s the issues surrounding Aubameyang’s life off the pitch. The African star is known for enjoying himself, especially during his time off. How will that play out in north London?
