My Aim Is To Be Greater Than Pasuma - Blind 13 Year Old Fuji Singer

With just two plastic bottles, visually-impaired Basit Raheem drums like a professional and sings fuji music flawlessly.

The story of the 13-year-old talent was made public when a video of him singing Pasuma’s songs was uploaded on the Internet. Within a few days, the video caught the attention of Pasuma, who eventually met the young boy in his home.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Basit stated that his talent is not restricted to singing fuji music alone. He said, “I can sing all kinds of songs, but I like fuji music the most. I know most of the songs of Davido, Olamide and Wizkid. I thank God for everything he has done for me and the gift he gave me. I just want people to help me because I want to be great in life. I want to be greater than Pasuma. I love music and it is the only thing I want to do.”

According to Basit’s father, Taiwo Raheem, people have been paying them visits but the future of the boy still looks uncertain as they are yet to receive any help. He said, “I thank everyone for the love they have shown towards my son. We have not received any help, though people have been visiting. Pasuma has promised to help us. He told us that Basit will be performing with him on stage. I’m so happy for my son because he loves Pasuma and knows all his songs. When we visited Pasuma, he was happy to meet Basit too.”

Explaining the circumstances that led to Basit’s blindness, Taiwo, a bricklayer, said, “I have six children and Basit is the second. He was not born blind. He hadn’t even started walking as a kid when the trouble started. We took him to different places for help but there was no solution. When I took him to a place known as Oke Agbara (Mountain of Power) in Ibadan, they told us that there was nothing we could do but to show him endless love and support. They said that he would be great and he would also regain his sight someday.”

Taiwo also said he is ready to give Basit quality education, but all efforts to convince Basit to take education seriously have proved abortive. He said, “Basit was in a school before, but he told us he wanted to focus on music. He has been singing since he was eight years old. I would have loved to take him to a music school, but I don’t have the means. I don’t get jobs regularly and his mother’s business has collapsed also.”
