Businesswoman Sent To Prison For Stealing huge Amount of Money in Lagos

A 65-year old businesswoman has been arrested and arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly obtaining the sum of N2.6m from Ahaotu Maxwell to sell an uncompleted two bedroom flat for him, but instead converted the money to her use after selling the apartment.

The accused, Chinyere Efienokwu, a resident of Ilogbo, Badagry, Lagos was arrested by the operatives of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, CIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos following a complaint by Maxwell.

After investigation by Sgt Adegboyega Osimuwa and his team, the accused was charged before a Tinubu Magistrate Court on a three-count charge of felony to wit, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

Police Counsel, Ben Ekundayo informed the court in charge No B/04/2018 that the accused committed the offence on 12 December, 2017 at Okira, Ilogbo, Badagry.

Ekundayo told the Court that the accused collected the sum of N2.6m from the complainant, Maxwell with the pretext to sell an uncompleted double 2 bedroom flat left behind by her late husband for him at Ilogbo, Badagry, Lagos.

He said that after the accused collected the money from the complainant, she converted the money to her use and escaped before she was arrested at a hide out following a tip off.

Ekundayo said that the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 411, 314 (2) and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime and Chief Magistrate A. A. Adefulire granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adefulire adjourned the case till 1 March, 2018 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Kirikiri prison till she fulfilled the bail conditions.
