After Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring against West Bromwich Albion, the Manchester United striker chose not to celebrate.

The former Chelsea forward headed home a sumptuous cross from Marcus Rashford in the first half to set United on their way, with Jesse Lingard adding a second shortly after in a 2-1 win.

Lukaku’s lack of celebration against his former club was criticised by United legend Gary Neville, with the striker pulling a similar stunt when netting against Bournemouth in midweek.

But Mourinho – who also barely reacted when the Belgian found the net – defended his front man and believes he was just showing respect to his former club.

And the Portuguese explained why he chose not to celebrate the goal either.

‘I didn’t celebrate too,’ he said after the match. ‘Nobody was happier than me.

‘Fifteen years ago I look at myself celebrating goals. With maturity you go into levels that you control your emotions better.

‘Romelu was a happy kid at West Brom – maybe at the back of the mind it was his love for the club.’
