Eleven people were arrested after a large fight broke out in a busy east London shopping centre during the Boxing Day sales.

Two police officers were injured and taken to hospital amid the violent scenes in Westfield Stratford on Tuesday afternoon.

Horrified shoppers described how a mass brawl broke out between two large groups, with dramatic footage showing security staff battling to bring the disturbance under control.

Officers rushed to the shopping centre following reports of disturbance at about 2.30pm. Eleven people were arrested.

Two knives were seized as police issued a Section 60 order, which gives them powers to stop and search people after violence erupts.

Met officers posted images of three blades they recovered from the scene.

Scotland Yard said it deployed extra officers to the area and the groups involved in the violence were eventually dispersed.

Some entrances to the centre were reportedly closed for a short time while the situation was dealt with.

Westfield said there was a “minor disturbance” at the centre, “which was resolved quickly”.

In statement, it disputed reports that the centre was evacuated.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Officers attended and additional high-visibility patrols were deployed, and groups causing the disorder were dispersed.

“A total of 11 people were arrested for a variety of offences, and two knives were recovered.

“Two police officers have received hospital treatment for minor injuries.”
