Obasanjo rallies support for Zimbabwe as Mnangagwa is sworn in

A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on all Africans to give the necessary cooperation and support to the new government in Zimbabwe.

Obasanjo said in a congratulatory letter to the new President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, a copy of which was made available to one of our correspondents on Friday.

The former president noted that he was convinced that the interim leader in Zimbabwe would be an asset to the country.

The letter read, “It is with profound delight and happiness that I convey my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment as the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

“As you assume the mantle of leadership of your great country, I have no doubt in my mind that you will execute the responsibilities of your office with the great political acumen that you are noted for.

“Your world-acclaimed experience in business and the legal profession, I am convinced, will be an asset to be utilised effectively and efficiently to take Zimbabwe out of the political and economic doldrums.

“At the moment, Zimbabwe needs the cooperation of the continent of Africa and cooperation of her friends outside the continent for the advancement of the economic fortunes of your great people and country.

“I am, therefore, of the strong conviction that the excellent relations between Nigeria and Zimbabwe will also benefit and blossom under your leadership.”

Meanwhile, the interim leader paid tribute to former President Robert Mugabe as he was sworn in on Friday. He referred to him as a “mentor” but vowed to eschew Mugabe’s policies.

Mnangagwa, who served as Mugabe’s right-hand man for most of his 37-year rule, promised reforms, which would lift Zimbabwe out of poverty and promised to stamp out rampant corruption.

He, however, eulogised Mugabe as a national hero, referring to him as “my father.”

Mugabe was forced to resign and hand over power on November 21, after the military intervened following his decision to sack Mnangagwa to pave way for his wife’s plan to succeed him.

“He led us in our struggle for national independence. He assumed responsibility for leadership at a formative and very challenging time. To me personally, he remains a father, mentor, comrade in arms and my leader,” Mnangagwa said, calling on the Zimbabweans to “let bygones be bygones.”
