Riders, soldiers’ clash: Police arraign suspects in Abia

The Abia State Police Command on Wednesday arraigned 10 suspects arrested on Monday in connection with the clash between soldiers and tricycle operators in Umuahia, the state capital.
The police prosecutor, S.E. Onyemauche, arraigned the suspects on eight counts before the Magistrate’s Court, Umuahia.

He accused the defendants of conspiring to commit felony and riotous assembly, an offence that he said was punishable under Section 516A of the Criminal Code, Cap. 80, Vol. 3, Law of Abia State, 2016.

He also accused the defendants of malicious damage to property, adding that they “wilfully and unlawfully broke the windscreen of a Hilux vehicle, property of the Nigerian Army, an offence punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 80, Vol 3, Law of Abia State, 2015.”

The police equally accused the suspects of resisting, and injuring Sergeant Adewuyi Aderemi, Private Eze Kenneth and Lance Corporal Ayaogu of 14 Battalion, Ohafia, in the process; an offence said to be punishable under Section 332 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 80, Vol 3, Law of  Abia State, 2005.

The defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

The Chief Magistrate, Linda Ugbaja, admitted the defendants to bail with one surety each who must be resident in  the Umuahia North Magistrial District and who must show evidence of three years tax clearance; or in the alternative, pay the sum of 400,000 each.

The case was adjourned till September 18, 2017, for hearing.
