Late Bucknor was a jazz and Afro pop artist in his hay days. He started his musical career under the tutelage of highlife singer, Roy Chicago. He later on became leader of the band called the Soul Assembly which had Mike Nelson Cole and Sunmi Smart Cole as members of the band and were known for their soul songs such as Lord Give Me Soul and I Will Love You No Matter How. The group later drifted from soul songs to a style of Afrobeat. In mourning his death, Sunmi Smart Cole who they formed the Assembly band together took to his Facebook page to pay tribute to the late music icon.

He wrote: Late Segun Bucknor and his friend Sunmi Smart Cole “Mr. BETRAM OLUSEGUN BUCKNOR, better known as SEGUN BUCKNOR, passed away, in Lagos, in the early hours of today. He was my friend and brother of more than 50 years. A multi-talented artiste, Segun was a world-class musician (pianist/keyboardist, guitarist, singer, recording artiste and bandleader). He was a co-founder of THE SOUL ASSEMBLY and SEGUN BUCKNOR AND THE ASSEMBLY. I was the drummer in the two groups. He was a very good writer (columnist for LAGOS LIFE newspaper from the Guardian stable) ... I edited the title. He was also a contributing editor for my magazine, PHOTONEWS. I am very sad. May his soul rest in peace.”

It had earlier been reported that juju musician Yinka Ayefele donated a wheelchair to retired singer Segun Bucknor during a courtesy visit radio presenter Oladotun Taylor and his Roots and Heritage Renaissance Culture Initiative paid Ayefele. Taylor who had visited the late Bucknor earlier was told by the late Afro pop singer his desire to have an electric wheelchair.

Late Segun Bucknor and Dotun Taylor when the latter visited him (Images: Facebook) Segun Bucknor was a journalist, and an artist, no wonder one of his children treaded his path and became the famous radio personality Tosin Bucknor. Another of his children is lawyer turned event planner extraordinaire Funke Bucknor-Obruthe.
