So sad: Two babies, two others die in Imo building collapse
Tragedy struck in Owerri, the Imo state capital on Sunday when a three-storey building collapsed, killing four persons on the spot, while three out of the seven survivors were severely wounded and were in a coma as of the time of filing this report.Illustration purpose |
The parents of the a year and six months old child, Mrs and Mrs Dominic Nnabu and one Sunday Uzohor, survived with minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital as they were said to be in stable conditions.
But two serving Corps members and one 40 year old Mr Anoruo who were trapped in the building collapsed were unconscious as medical doctors at the police clinic, Owerri, were said to be battling to save their lives.
While the male Corps Member was simply identified as Chinedu, the female one whose name had yet to be given was identified as a Law graduate who was undertaking her one year compulsory National Youth Service corps at Douglas Street in the state capital.
Our correspondent gathered that the two Corps members were sleeping in the same room when the building collapsed in the dead of the night.
The rescue of the Corps members took eight hours as they were buried in the ground by the building,luckily they were still breathing when they were finally rescued.
One of the stable survivors, Uzoha, said that there was nothing that showed that danger was lurking, adding that it was by the grace of God that he survived.
Mr Dominic Nnabu, the father of One of the dead children said that it was by God grace that himself and his wife survived, adding they they were barely two months old in the collapsed building.
The state commissioner of police, Chris Ezike said that preliminary investigation showed that the tragedy was as a result of unprofessional construction work by the engineering them .
Exike assured that with the quantum destruction of properties and lost of lives, his Command would prosecute all those whose actions and inactions caused the disaster.
The officer in charge of police clinic in the state, Bose Salami, confirmed to our correspondent that that two children and two adults died in the incident.
She said that the two Corps members and one Anoruo were being treated in the medical clinic.
A representative of the state chapter of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr Kingsley Onwubiko told our correspondent that investigation had revealed that the tragedy was as a result of unprofessional approach.
According to him, the building was an old one which its owner against professional guidelines decided to build three storey building on top of it which led to its collapses.
He said that his Association would collaborate with the security Agencies to make sure that the culprits do not escape justice.
A sympathizer, Barrister Kissinger Ikeokwu urged the state government to clamp down on quack engineers, adding that the spate of building collapses in the state were worrisome.
As of the time of filing this report, all rescue operation had been concluded, all the dead and survived persons were who were trapped in the debris had been brought out.
Our correspondent recalls that this building collapse brought the it to a total of five buildings that had collapsed in Owerri in the last one month.
