Man Finds Abandoned Newborn Baby Being Eaten By Ants Outside

A disturbing video was livestreamed showing an abandoned newborn baby covered in ants and blood at a Houston apartment complex.

The baby was found early on Thursday morning by a man living in the Bridges of Cypress Creek complex. He had been on his way to work when he heard the muffled cries of the baby girl and upon investigation, he found the child. Albert Peterson immediately took the child to his apartment while his wife called the authorities at around 5:30 a.m.

"I looked down. I said, 'Oh, man, there is a baby right here,'" Albert Peterson, who found the girl, told KTRK. "The baby was brand new."

The baby is believed to have been less than an hour old when she was found. Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the baby was abandoned near bushes and covered in ants and blood. Her umbilical cord was still attached.

Harris County sheriff's Deputy Thomas Gilliland said: "Had this neighbor not been here, we'd be looking at a homicide. It's a miracle the child was found."

A trail of blood wrapped around the corner of the building led detectives to the baby's mother. When detectives arrived at the house where the blood trail ended and knocked on the door, no one answered. When the residents eventually opened the door, they denied knowing anything about the baby, but a 21-year-old woman later admitted to being the mother.

It is believed that the baby was born inside the apartment before being left outside. The mother is in custody and is undergoing medical and psychological evaluations. The baby was hospitalized for observation and is reportedly healthy. She will be turned over to Child Protective Services. A man in the apartment also was taken into custody.
