Flood severely submerged two communities in Kogi

Flood submerged Odochala and Okudigbo communities in Ibaji Area (Kogi State), which led to property detriment, Kogi online newspaper informs.

Such a massive flood caused the Kogi government to announce a state of emergency. The priority was immediately given to environmental issues. Mr. Simon Achuba, the state Deputy Governor, revealed the plan which he received from the officials of Ecological Fund Office, who arrived in Lokoja.

According to the official, the government declared an environmental sanitation day (the last Saturday of a month) to gather the locals to sanitary their neighborhood. He also thanked the Federal Government for all the necessary support, which all people in two communities require urgently.

Mrs. Rosemary Osikoya, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, told that earlier the ministry had revealed the ecological reports to the team on nineteen local government areas in Kogi state.

According to her, the department and the team met and worked hard with experts. As a result, they counted 194 erosion and flood locations in 19 local areas. It represents more than 53% of all areas which must have been covered.

Moreover, Mrs. Rosemary Osikoya declared that last week the Kogi State government prepared a special workshop on afforestation and climate change. Many stakeholders attended it.

More to the point, Osikoya told that the government reopened forest reserves of Kogi State, and began new tree planting for afforestation campaign in 2017.
