Arsenal wins the Community Shield on penalties after Saed Kolasinac header cancelled out Victor Moses opener following controversial red card for Pedro.Arsenal won the first trophy of the 2017-18 season against Chelsea through spot kicks after an entertaining and controversial Community Shield clash in the sunshine at Wembley.
Victor Moses looked to have made amends for his red card in the FA Cup final between these two sides in May, when just after half time he smashed past Petr Cech from six yards.
However, it also seemed to signify the moment that Chelsea woke up and, as Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante found a way to dictate terms in the centre of the field, Conte’s team found some forward momentum and started to look dangerous with it.
Twice just after the half an hour mark Petr Cech was called on to save in the Arsenal goal. Neither was difficult as he kicked away a low shot from Moses at his near post and then beat away a rising drive from the masked Spaniard Pedro but the incidents did serve notice of an increased Chelsea threat. Willian may have had a penalty soon after when he moved on to a mistake from Bellerin in the Arsenal box and fell under the Spaniard’s challenge.
Replays showed there was some contact knee to knee but it was hard to tell who had initiated it. Referee Bobby Madeley seemed in little doubt and promptly booked Willian for an alleged dive. It was a brave call but possibly the wrong one.
If Chelsea felt aggrieved they didn’t show it and within a minute of the restart for the second half they had the lead.
However, with ten minutes to play Pedro was surprisingly sent off for a tackle on Mohamed Elneny, and from the resulting free kick debutant Saed Kolasinac headed past Thibaut Courtois.
In the resultant penalty shoot out, Courtois surprisingly took Chelsea's second kick and blasted it over, while £55m striker, Alvaro Morata hit the post, leaving the wining kick to be slammed in by Olivier Giroud.
