Following a consent judgment given by a Niger State High Court sitting in Minna, the state’s Liquor Licensing Board has closed down a notorious drinking outlet in the metropolis known as T-Mama.

It was learnt that the 15-year-old drinking joint, situated in the Sauka kahuta area of Minna, had become a hideout for criminals and sex workers.

Northern City News gathered that the community had earlier petitioned the police, the Department of State Services and the Liquor Board, seeking the relocation of the drinking joint from their area.

The community was said to have demanded the closure of the watering hole on account of its negative influence on the youths in the area.

The Executive Chairman of the Niger State Liquor Board, Yahaya Halidu, who led the board’s operations department to execute the court judgment on Sunday, told our correspondent  that the closure of the alcohol sales outlet in Sauka Kahuta was a landmark achievement by the board to ensure that peace reigned in the area.

Halidu said, “What the board has done today is to comply with the judgment of the court and we have no other option but to close down this drinking joint in the interest of peace and security of the people of the area.

“Nobody believed that this notorious drinking joint that habours prostitutes and criminals for many years would be closed down. People living in this community can now have their peace.”

Halidu said the board had been having a running legal battle with the proprietor of the drinking joint, in its bid to ensure that nobody circumvented the liquor law of the state.

He warned that the board would henceforth clamp down on illegal sales of alcohol in the state and “prostitutes who are caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

The Head of Operations in the liquor board, Mallam Marafa kagara, said every drinking joint operator and brewers of local alcoholic, called Burukutu, who failed to comply with the 10pm daily closing time would be arrested and prosecuted.
