Baby girl born premature at just 25 weeks weighing less than one pound wins her amazing battle to survive

The mother of a premature baby who was told she had to prepare for the worst during the pregnancy has spoken of her daughter's against-the-odds battle to survive.
Tiny newborn Poppy Wicks pictured on the maternity ward at Southmead hospital in Bristol.
Poppy Wicks weighed just 12.7oz when she was born, so small when her legs and arms were curled up she could easily fit in the palm of a hand.

Hannah Wicks and partner Steve McSween, both 31 from Bristol, were told Poppy's chances of survival throughout the pregnancy were slim.

Just 18 weeks into doctors warned the baby would be dead on the next scan as there had been no signs of growth.

Hannah had even bought a tiny rabbit toy so her precious little one would not be alone in her coffin.
The couple had tried to explain to Oliver, Hannah’s five-year-old son from a past relationship, that he might never meet her.

Despite the dire forecasts from experts Poppy was born on March 9, just a week past the abortion limit, and is back home.

Hannah told the Mirror: 'Poppy really is our miracle baby – she's just fought and fought and fought against all the odds.

'But she's made it. We've never given up hope but we always prepared for the worst – that Poppy would not survive.
'All along we were told, 'She's not going to be alive at the next scan'.
The baby now weighs 4lb 5oz – compared to the average 7lb 5oz for a newborn – although she contracted sepsis when she was six weeks old and still needs an oxygen aid.
Poppy also is at a high risk of cerebral palsy and other complications further down the line.

However, her parents are just happy she was born at all having prepared for their little girl's death, even picking a burial site and planning the funeral.
'We weren't going to give up on her,' says Steve, as he cradles Poppy in her handmade woollen blanket.

'We had stopped buying clothes and preparing for the birth. But we never gave up hope.'
Talking of Poppy's birth by emergency Caesarean at 25 weeks in Bristol's Southmead Hospital Hannah adds: 'When they said they had to deliver, I burst into tears. That's when it hit me, 'She's either going to make it or not'.

'So many people had said, 'She's too small.' We were told the hospital medical equipment to save her life after birth was too small for her and they wouldn't be able to help her.
'But after the birth one of the doctors brought her over to me and I was able to kiss her. It meant so much that I had seen her.'
