News Update: Prince Philip admitted to hospital with infection

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital for treatment for an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

Buckingham Palace said it was a precautionary measure, but did not stipulate what the condition was.

The 96-year-old was admitted to the King Edward VII hospital in central London after becoming unwell at Windsor, following his appearance at Royal Ascot. He arrived at the hospital by car in the evening, accompanied by his personal protection officer.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

“Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the state opening of parliament and Royal Ascot.”

One aide said: “He is up and about and is in good spirits.”

The Queen was accompanied to the state opening of parliament by the Prince of Wales, who is taking his father’s place. She is being kept “fully informed” and will continue her plans to attend Royal Ascot following her delivery of the Queen’s speech at the Houses of Parliament.

It is not yet known if Philip will be discharged on Wednesday as medical staff are monitoring his condition. Aides have said he was not admitted as an emergency.

Philip was at Royal Ascot on Tuesday with the Queen and other members of the royal family. He was pictured being escorted from his carriage towards the race course by his granddaughter Zara Tindall, who placed her arm affectionately around his shoulder as they walked.
