JEREMY Corbyn has picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Theresa May’s snap general election bid. But if the Labour leader loses the election, will he step down from his position?

Labour are closing the gap in the latest polls after announcing their manifesto this week, but victory still seems to be out of reach for Mr Corbyn.

A YouGov poll for The Times published yesterday, shows Labour are one point up at 32 per cent but are still trailing behind the Conservatives who are four points down at 45 per cent.

When Theresa May announced her snap general election back in April, she aimed to unify the Government before Britain sits down to negotiate Brexit conditions.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, she accused political opponents and the House of Lords of “game-playing” and hindering her job.

In a jab at her political enemies, Mrs May said: "In recent weeks Labour has threatened to vote against the deal we reach with the European Union.

"The Liberal Democrats have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill.

"And unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way.

"Our opponents believe that because the Government's majority is so small, our resolve will weaken and that they can force us to change course.

"They are wrong.”

Jeremy Corbyn stepped up to the challenge and welcome the general election, confident he could steer Labour to victory.

Following the announcement he issued a statement saying: “I welcome the Prime Minister’s decision to give the British people the chance to vote for a Government that will put the interests of the majority first.

“Labour will be offering the country an effective alternative to a Government that has failed to rebuild the economy, delivered falling living standards and damaging cuts to our schools and NHS.”

Will Jeremy Corbyn step down if he loses the election?

It is traditional though not mandatory for party leaders to step down after failed elections.

With Labour currently standing 13 points below the Tories in the latest polls, Mr Corbyn’s chances of winning look slim.

Talking to Sky News in April he was asked if he would be the next prime minister, to which he replied: “If we win the election, yes.
