BREAKING NEWS: Schoolboy, 15, dies in lake tragedy while swimming with friends

Police say a schoolboy has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends in a lake in Pelsall.

Police, ambulances and fire crews were called to the Ryder's Hayes estate shortly after 7pm.

Shortly after 9pm West Midlands Police confirmed a boy had died after getting into difficulties in the lake behind the estate, known as the Ackers.

A spokesman said: "Emergency services are at Ryders Hayes Mear off Ryders Hayes Lane in Walsall where a teenage boy got into difficulty while swimming in the lake with friends around 7pm this evening.

"Sadly fire service colleagues recovered the 15-year-old’s body just over an hour later.

"Officers are currently with the boy’s family. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them."

Pictures showed at least four ambulances, police and and a fire engine in attendance around St Andrew's Avenue.

The air ambulance also landed on the estate, locals said.

Pelsall councillor Garry Perry said: "There is a major incident ongoing in what's commonly known as the Ackers and we should not speculate until emergency services issue a statement, then we should respond accordingly."
